DANGEROUS INTERSECTION

Another accident at the corner of Nigh and Point Abino Roads within two weeks is not a co-incidence. It is proof that there is something terribly wrong with the configuration of that intersection and something needs to be done about it before someone gets killed.

There are a couple of other places that are dangerous as well. I live near the hot mess that is the corner of Dominion and Gorham Roads. Another intersection I avoid like the plague. What that corner desperately needs is a traffic signal. That is all. But the brilliant minds at the region think that adding a Left Turn lane will solve the problem. Not. What do you think?

Several months ago the town sent trucks to the intersection of Point Abino and Nigh Roads in Ridgeway.

Measurements were taken from the corners and lines sprayed on the road for placement of the new poles which I learned were to hold new stop signs on Nigh, making the intersection a four-way stop.

Several weeks passed before the town trucks came back to install the metal posts. They have been standing without signs since then.

One can only wonder why the actual stop signs have not yet been assigned to the posts, after such a length of time.

Now there have been two serious accidents at that intersection of Nigh and Point Abino in the last few weeks.

When I travel those roads, especially coming west on Nigh, I never fulfill the speed limit of 80 km/h because I fear that people driving the north-south are in too much a hurry to either get to Highway 3 or down to the lake, that they choose not to respect the stop signs.

Many times have I had to throw on the brakes while driving on Nigh because you just can't judge if the cars coming through Point Abino are going to come to a stop.

Perhaps if the town kept the corners cleaned of grasses and overhanging branches, it would be easier to see the corner stop sign.

Perhaps if the town lowered the speed limit on back country roads there would be less hurry at that intersection.

Perhaps, if there really are to be stop signs erected to make a four-way stop, the signs could have been measured, posts put up and stop signs installed all in one day instead of letting this go all summer long.

This is truly a dangerous intersection.

Blame the drivers not the town or the region...

Anonymous,

I definately agree that the fault of these accidents rests on the shoulders of drivers who do not stop for the signs on Point Abino.

Indeed, they are ultimately responsible for running the stops, and no doubt pay dearly.

My point regarding this particular intersection is that the town started a project to make it a four-way stop several months ago. The stop signs are still not on the posts.

Two accidents have happened in the meantime, caused by drivers running Abino.

Maybe with the signs up on Nigh, drivers going east and west will at least have a chance because they will have to stop and at least assess whether the north and south bound cars are really going to stop at the intersection.

Oh, and by the way, as it stands today, the 18th of August, after the last accident, it will only be a three-way stop until the post is re-installed at the south-west corner of Nigh (that would be the future stop sign on the south side of Nigh, heading east, at Point Abino Road).

I seriously wonder how long it will take before the post is repaired and the stop signs go up.

I seriously hope there will be no further accidents at that corner before that time.

I guess people care more about loiterers than they do about intersections that can kill.

I did receive the following update:

"I do want to let you know that I touched base with Rob Eberley about the Abino/Nigh corner today after leaving a message yesterday. We had a good talk. Seems there was a glitch in getting the Nigh stop signs up because Abino is Regional and Nigh is town, and they were supposed to connect before putting everything in place. At least that is what he said. So town and region have to connect on this and it should be brought up at their next meeting, soon, so signs could be up next week. I think that will be a good thing, especially if east-west has to stop just to be sure they won't be hit by north-south."

Don't know where else to post this.

Just watched the Gilmour/Whitfield video.

What's this .... you get voted into office and think you own the town and can bully the citizens around.

Hey dickhead (Whitfield) we have paid for your salary, dearly. This term, not next !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I made the mistake once,NEVER AGAIN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
