THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS

I really need to get out more, but life in my tree house is so wonderful that it is difficult to tear myself away from my perfect little life. It was a long and difficult road to get to this place in my life and I'm savouring it. How great is it that I get to write and provoke people to become interested in what's happening in this great town while living in the perfect place myself. When I rail against incompetence or possible corruption from the present administration is that I believe that a town this great deserves the very best, the brightest and most honest people as its conservators. That's what elected officials and their administrators should remember: they have the onus to take excellent care of their charge and do what's best for the community while preserving it for future generations.
Yesterday, I went out and visited the beach. It wasn't planned as such, but the throngs of people walking along Erie Road (Hi Tom and friends from London!) drew me towards the beach itself and the parking situation. The lot along Erie Road that was once part of the amusement park was absolutely full and so were the town owned lots. Cars were circling around looking for spots both in the lots and on the side streets. Many residents of those streets have put out traffic cones to discourage parking in front of their cottages. Schooley Road was still congested as cars were parked on both sides leaving room for one car only to pass through. I took a couple of pictures of the parking situation, especially the cars that were parked on the berm. I pulled into the lot on the beach side, hoping to find a place to stop long enough to take a couple of pictures but then I saw a car that was running and looked like the driver was ready to pull out. I gestured and he nodded, so I moved my car out of the way as he pulled out and then I backed in. The passenger in the car that recently vacated the spot, got out and came over and handed me the park-and-display slip saying, "It's for all day, you can have it." I thanked her profusely and said that I was only going to be there for a short time but would pass it on to someone else when I left. Wow. I must say I was stunned by this random act of kindness. I took my pictures and walked around until the heat and my heavy, cover-the-fat clothes became unbearable. As I was heading towards my car, I noticed a car in the row. I approached the Ontario-plated family car and told the driver that I was pulling out and he could have my parking spot. I also told him that I had an all-day pass he could have. I also told him that the ground we're standing on may be sold by the town to a developer. They were shocked. It was too hot to explain further or find out where they were from, so I gave them the pass; got in my car and drove away.
Later in the day, my BFF and I went Dumpster Diving down in the Beach. We stopped to check out the Waterfront Park concert just as it was winding down and ended up having an fascinating conversation with a couple who recently moved into Ridgeway. The gentleman said he had visited over forty countries and lived in dozens and decided that our little town of Fort Erie was the best place to live. (OK. He did admit that he and his wife went to Florida in January for a couple of months.) In fact, they moved to Fort Erie after living in Florida for 18 years. He was very aware of the local political climate and the problems and challenges facing the people of the town. It is always eye-opening to hear a relative newcomer to the area extol the virtues of the place many of us take for granted. It also makes me more determined to continue The Strand so that people can express their concerns and complaints about how this town is run. It's a given that there are great things about this town and things that work right, but I operate on the "squeaky wheel philosophy." The Strand will not be a tool of the establishment. There are no paid ads. Once a news source has to solicit ads, its editorial policy can become compromised when lucrative advertisers threaten to pull ads when stories are not complimentary. Then there's the case of one local tabloid that is already gearing up to once-again discredit candidates for public office that the "establishment" (PBA) does not want in office.
Meanwhile, the little-blog-that-could plugs away, growing every day (thank you, readers,) and is totally self-funded by me. MY payment will come in the future when the Town of Fort Erie gets the honest, efficient and transparent government it deserves.

I sit here with the vista of Queens circle, I can not but ask my-self the same questions about Health, And Safety issues! Are little kids allowed to ride bikes without a helmet? In the last 20 minutes there have been 20 kids, and they do not look at the traffic situation, just on the circle, THIS IS A TRAGEDY - A THING THAT WILL HAPPEN. Is there a fine for Parents, who allow this where would the fine money go? Next, the cars that come up Derby from Erie Rd. when they get to the STOP SIGN AT QUEENS Circle ONE Out OF 8 or nine actually do not stop. I know this is a one hundred $ fine, and Yes everyone, at the police and the town are SCREAMING ABOUT MONEY , I SAY to them GET OFF YOUR ASSES, AND MAKE IT ! I do not have, or do not know how to operate, such a device, but I could, from my vista, record all of this, and IT should be sent to police, and Mostly THE TOWN HAUL WHO SO DESPERATE FOR MONEY.

BTW, I did see one police car in the Beach as I made my tour. You are the second person who made the same observation. I was speaking with someone you know who who visits the area and he said that the way the cars scream up and down Derby is insane. Said the same thing about the kids riding their bikes without helmets. I saw a couple myself. I'm sure there are local groups who would help parents get helmets for their kids if they can't afford to buy a helmet. Even the second-hand stores have helmets, although they may not be good ones, but better than none. And you know who will pay for the medical expenses if such an accident occurs.

So that one parking spot earned $5 for the town, but three cars parked in it -- net loss of earnings $10. Thanks for all your great ideas.

Oh puleeze. You talk about me taking a negative view of anything positive. At least someone paid to park. What about the people who park along Erie Road in the two hour spots? Those spots are reserved for those who visit the businesses along that stretch. Those people and pay nothing to park - not even a fine for blocking a limited time space for several hours while customers of those businesses go elsewhere as they can't find a place to park. The town could be making even more money if its parking by-law officers were to visit the area and ticket cars that are in violation of the parking by-laws. The fact that someone "played it forward" and then I did the same, is not the problem. Some of you posters always pick apart a story but completely ignore the crux of the issue discussed. Comment on the issue of what the public beach means to the economy of the the area and what can be done to improve it.

The town can make OODELES of money if it would enforce the laws already on the books----sya like all the cars that park illegaly and block the road at tim hortons for one ( the fine from town trucks alone would pay for a new conmmunity center.

Or how about we get rid of the dead wood at;
town haul
EDTC
gamming corp

editor i agree

even though my job will take me far away from our community for a time I do not plan to sell and move.

i hope that the failures- elected and staff will soon be removed and the Dark Ages of Fort Erie will end and a new begining of our towns full potential will shine once again.

We've all been to Tim Horton's Drive thrus in other locations. There's a very long entrance to the drive thru itself and it's located at the very back of the large lot that the franchise stands on. In Crystal Beach, there is enough room in the drive thru (before the order mike) for three cars. The others have to wait on the street and they do - blocking the left lane of Ridgeway Road going south and the hugging the curbs heading north. A very dangerous and illegal situation that is never dealt with and won't be until there is an accident or someone gets killed. Pedestrians have already been struck, but nothing has been done to improve the situation. That is why the whole drive thru and 24 hour facility needs to be scaled back to just walk-in service and an early closing. And that's not even mentioning the hangers-on who scare away the customers who dare to park and walk in the front door.

My family and I spent the day at the beach and had a great day.I was lucky to find a place to park in the lot near the beach. $5 for all day and we brought a cooler fun of food so it was a cheap day except for the gas from Fonthill. Best beach in Niagara. I hope it stays the same.

There is another beach that is in jeopardy. Thunder Bay Beach at the foot of Bernard Road just had a new drainage system put in that basically takes all the storm runoff, carries it by way of culverts, and disperses it under the beach. Many groups opposed this saying it would lead to a channel of water eroding the beach, and that the water would come up thru the surface rather than flow underneath. This is exactly what is happening. go take a look. one of our nicest beaches being destroyed. the Town was warned but they chose to do it anyways. maybe you could post some pictures on here so everyone could see.

The Editor said...

Thank you for the tip. I have driven by the area many times, but there were always big bulldozers and the beach was closed off. I will definitely make a return trip today or tomorrow and take a look and take some pictures. I was skeptical about that whole drainage system that in Thunder Bay, but I don't trust much that this town does anyways. Another reader phoned me to explain what was happening and why and she apparently was right that it's going to only help a select few while it may endanger a very nice beach. What is wrong with these people who are so careless with our beautiful beaches?

The culverts at Thunder Bay Beach do not disperse the water under the beach.

Quote EDITOR " The fact that someone "played it forward" and then I did the same, is not the problem. issue of what the public beach means to the economy of the the area and what can be done to improve it."

Get real EDITOR .... you posted the topic!!!!!

What is the Title of YOUR Topic ......" THE KINDNESS OF STRANGERS" then you chastise posters for responding your Titled article.

Your initial insertion was about the kindness of people to "beat the system" .... as you participated in, to deprive the Town of Fort Erie of just revenue for providing parking facilities for the beach. Seems to me that YOU had posted this as an asset for supporting the retaining the beach as a public access.

THEN ..... you, through no apparent reasoning revert the discussion to the Tim Horton concerns.

Where are you going with this thread ..... which way are you going? Nobody has a clue as to which direction this supposed Blog is going !!!!!

You are very confusing, yet accuse your posters with comments like "Some of you posters always pick apart a story but completely ignore the crux of the issue discussed."

You have a lot to learn about respecting individual's opinions.

Why do you bother reading and commenting on this blog, anyway? Just so you can find fault with everything I do and write? Have at it. Your life must be so boring.

took some kids to crystal beach today. have been before but took a look around, not being from the area originally, i was wondering were they proposse to build?? there was a lot of people and the snack bar was doing a good business, iwasa talking to the people on the gate and was told it was packed on the weekend. i inquired about the snow fence and was told the person who put it up thinks that the beach on that side is hers and the water out as far as the markers were placed. if anyone takes it down or complains she goes to the mayor. it is my understanding that waterfront is public acces for all and that the town has a fence bylaw with certain standards, does this apply here? we stopped in at a local eatery after and mentiones we had been to the beach, a lot of the talk was that it was a shame to build houses and take away the beach. i did notice a lot of empty buildings along the street, and not to many people out and about both coming and going from the beach. is there many stores in that area?

The Editor said...

I'm not sure who you're referring to re: snow fence, but my understanding is that the beach itself is public and that the Shorewalk group has done a lot to remove barriers to the beach on the public road allowances. Here is their website:http://www.shorewalk.ca/.
I would also suggest that you attend the public meeting tomorrow night at the Crystal Ridge Library of the Friends of Crystal Beach.
As to the empty buildings, yes there are many - and many more for sale. The reason the developers might be more interested in the Bay Beach Properties is that there is a clear vista to the lake and beach. Other available properties on Erie Road have no view of the lake as the Hill cottages on the sand dune block the view, so those properties are useless to a developer who wants to market high end condos on the lake. The Bay Beach Properties are the last such piece of undeveloped land in the area. It has the potential to bring millions to a developer.

"IF ONLY THEY'D VISIT THE BEACH"

Why? To have a gang of delinquents rudely ask them to leave.

How was Martha rudely asked to leave whwn you say no member of council has visited the beach since March?

The Editor said...

Yeah, you're right about her visiting the beach and being asked to leave. That incident happened late in the day when the beach was empty and she was accompanied by a man in a suit, or so I've been told. What Lewis was referring to was his hope that someone from the town council, the mayor, the town planner or the EDTC head would visit the beach on a day like last Sunday and talk to the people.

EDITOR: Your comment "Why do you bother reading and commenting on this blog, anyway? Just so you can find fault with everything I do and write? Have at it. Your life must be so boring." I so typical of the strands attitude. Agree with me or dont post.

I reread your opening little story to this thread. What do want us to comment on? Quotes from your grade 8 story.

1. "my (your) perfect little life"

2. "Many residents of those streets have put out traffic cones to discourage parking in front of their cottages." That is an illegal practice as the town owns the road allowances, not the cottage owner.

3. "The passenger in the car that recently vacated the spot, got out and came over and handed me the park-and-display slip saying, "It's for all day, you can have it." I thanked her profusely and said that I was only going to be there for a short time but would pass it on to someone else when I left." This, though it may be seen as an act of kindness is also illegal.

4. Your "cover-the-fat clothes"

5. "I also told him that the ground we're standing on may be sold by the town to a developer." So their first impression of Crystal Beach is that of a unconfirmed rumour being solicited by the strand.

6. "Later in the day, my BFF and I went Dumpster Diving down in the Beach." Is that what I think it is ???

7. "The gentleman said he had visited over forty countries and lived in dozens and decided that our little town of Fort Erie was the best place to live." But as indicated, the conversation shifted to "the local political climate". I am sure that you had no bearing on the discussion taking that route.

8. "Once a news source has to solicit ads, its editorial policy can become compromised when lucrative advertisers threaten to pull ads when stories are not complimentary." You constantly comprimise the policy of a blog by repeatedly refusing posts which are not complimentary to the strands bias opinions.

SO WHAT DO WANT US TO RESPOND TO !!!!!!!???????

A person comments on how the illegal transfer of "untransferable" parking voucher adds to the loss of town revenue.

You respond with " Oh puleeze. You talk about me taking a negative view of anything positive. At least someone paid to park" .......
"Some of you posters always pick apart a story but completely ignore the crux of the issue discussed. Comment on the issue of what the public beach means to the economy of the the area and what can be done to improve it."

Like I said, I reread your entire self applauding story and nowhere ....NOWHERE, was a statement referring to "the issue discussed. Comment on the issue of what the public beach means to the economy of the the area and what can be done to improve it."

Then ....out of the blue, YOU post about Tim Hortons ..... what does that have to do with "the issue discussed. Comment on the issue of what the public beach means to the economy of the the area and what can be done to improve it."

If my disagreeing with some of your comments are considered to be "Just so you can find fault with everything I do and write? Have at it. Your life must be so boring."

So you brought up MY life.

Let me tell you about it ......

I go to work every day ..... DO YOU.

I pay taxes that benifit this town ..... DO YOU.

I have responsibly attended to all of my financial responsibilities .... HAVE YOU.

The Editor said...

Thank you for your comments. If you go to work every day, might one assume that you're using your employer's computer or are you self-employed?
