Another year begins. In the States, history will be made on January 20, when Barack Obama is sworn in as the first African-American elected to the presidency. With him comes the hopes and dreams of millions of people around the world. A tough task in this messed up world.
Here in Fort Erie, the challenges are many: high unemployment; businesses closing; tight money and all that goes with a recession.
Somewhere in the midst of all the bad news, there has to be some good. A little tree stands bravely against the wind and weather in Queen's Circle due to the efforts of one citizen who was determined to decorate the centre of Crystal Beach.
Could this little tree be the catalyst to bring people to the realization that they can't depend on someone else to get things done? My hope for 2009 is that it becomes the year that the all citizens of this town become proactive: attend council meetings; volunteer for local committees; contact your councillors with your concerns; write letters to the editors of local newspapers; call in to local talk radio shows; and do your part to move Fort Erie forward.
I have spent a lot of time pointing out what I believe to be the problems in Fort Erie and the people responsible for those problems. Unfortunately, we are stuck with the current administration until at least 2010. But we can all work around these obstacles and that's my hope for 2009. Predictions? Too bleak to report. That's why I'm hoping that the people of this great community will take action.
